General Guidelines
Allocation
Target maximum stock allocation of 5% of the equty portfolio size. If, for example, 50% of one’s overall portfolio is invested in equities, that entails a maximum 2.5% allocation relative to the overall portfolio.
Strategy
Be sure to have a strategy or process covering the type of stock selected, desired entry point(s), any stop-loss placement, target sell price(s) and target holding period.
Focus
Managing a stock portfolio requires focus and energy. If short on time, interest or motivation, stick with exchange-traded funds. Broad market ETFs - a "buy and forget" strategy - suit most private investors.
Prudence
Gradually enter into a position. Do not “average-down”. Avoid bottom-picking or selecting stocks trading at their lows or are in a downtrend. Seek lowest risk entry points, not lowest price.
